Problem drinking can cause physical and mental difficulties in daily lives. This study analyzed the effects of self-esteem on drinking problems and the moderating effects of gender and age groups by using multi-group analysis. The study sample is 8104 and the missing values were substituted using Full Information Maximum Likelihood Method (FIML). The result of the study showed that the higher the self-esteem, the lower the likelihood of having drinking problems. Moreover, the influence of self-esteem on drinking problems varied across different age groups. Specifically, the effect, while statistically significant on the male middle-aged group, was not significant on the male-youth group. And the effects of self-esteem was higher on the male-middle-aged compared to the female youth. Also the influence was statistically significant on the female-youth and male-middle aged groups compared to the female-middle aged group, which had no effect. Based on the result, this study suggests that program to enhance self-esteem and the alcohol addiction program specialized in different age groups are necessary.
